How to make a classroom seating chart (in about 2 minutes)
- Paste your class list. Copy names from Excel, Google Sheets, or your SIS roster — one per line.
- Set your room layout. Choose rows and seats per row. Click ✕ on any seat to mark an aisle or a missing desk.
- Fill or shuffle. "Fill seats in order" keeps your list order (alphabetical stays alphabetical). "Shuffle" assigns seats randomly.
- Fine-tune by dragging. Need two students separated? Drag one to the other side of the room. On a phone or tablet, tap one seat, then tap the destination.
- Print or save as PDF. The printout is a clean landscape chart with your class name, teacher name, and a "front of classroom" marker — no buttons, no clutter.
Why teachers use this instead of a slides template
Dragging text boxes around a slide works until the third revision. This tool treats the chart as data: reshuffle in one click when the dynamics change, toggle desks off when your room changes, and reprint in seconds. Nothing to install and nothing to sign up for.
Privacy note for schools: the whole tool runs locally in your browser. Student names never leave your device, which keeps you on the right side of FERPA-style data rules without paperwork.
Frequently asked questions
Is this seating chart maker really free?
Yes — free, no account, no watermark on your chart, no limit on how many charts you print.
Can I make a seating chart with an odd room shape?
Yes. Build the largest grid that covers your room, then click ✕ on the seats that don't exist. Dashed seats print as empty spaces, so the chart matches your real room.
How do I save it as a PDF?
Click "Print / save PDF", then choose "Save as PDF" as the printer in the print dialog. The chart prints in landscape automatically.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Dragging is replaced by tap-to-swap: tap the first student, then tap the seat you want them in.
Are student names uploaded anywhere?
No. There is no server and no database behind this tool — everything happens inside your browser tab and disappears when you close it.
